The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), an independent U.S. Government foreign aid agency, has initiated collaboration with The Gambia in a bid to increase energy supply and reliable access in the West African country.

With the primary objective of reducing poverty, the strategic partnership involves initial funding of $12 million, which will enable the launch of feasibility studies and project designs.

The program carries the potential to bring transformative change to the region by unlocking additional investments in education, transportation and eco-tourism along the River Gambia, a strategic area of the country.

The announcement comes on the back of growing collaboration between the U.S. and The Gambia. In November 2021, the MCC and The Gambia inked a threshold program agreement, committing $25 million toward addressing the nation’s economic growth challenges.

In December 2022, The Gambia was chosen to participate in MCC’s compact program, a comprehensive five-year grant initiative that concentrates on substantial infrastructure enhancements, policy reforms and institutional overhauls.
