Following significant progress made in workers’ rights, Mauritania will regain its trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) from January 2024, according to an announcement from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

AGOA is a U.S. trade initiative that aims to strengthen the country’s trade and investment ties with sub-Saharan African countries, helping to develop their respective economies through good governance and free market competition.

The program grants eligible countries duty-free access to more than 1,800 U.S. goods and services. Mauritania’s economy remains largely traditional in structure and is primarily composed of subsistence agriculture, fisheries and livestock industries.
