Mauritania and Oman have signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) to enhance cooperation across sectors, including oil and gas, mining, energy, communications and IT.
The agreements were signed on June 11 by Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, and his Omani counterpart, Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi.
Among other objectives, the MOUs aim to enhance coordination on training and research, as well as promote collaboration in energy, oil and gas, minerals, renewable energy and electricity. Minister Merzoug highlighted the broad range of investment opportunities in Mauritania for Omani investors, as well as the need to establish a joint cooperation commission to provide a legal framework for bilateral cooperation.
Oman serves as a mature oil and gas producer, producing over one million barrels per day and featuring modern and expansive infrastructure. Meanwhile, Mauritania represents a frontier market, with first gas production anticipated this year and a series of gas monetization and gas-to-power projects underway.
