Mauritania aims to more than double its iron ore production capacity to over 45 million tons per year by 2030. Iron ore production has already increased from 13 million tons in 2022 to 14 million tons in 2023, as noted by multilateral financing institution the African Development Bank (AfDB).
To meet production goals, the country will focus on producing high-quality iron ore and developing iron ore pellets, aligning with the global shift towards cleaner steel manufacturing processes. As the second-largest producer of iron ore in Africa, Mauritania boasts a largely untapped 20-billion-ton iron ore deposit.
Concurrently, the country plans to invest more heavily in green hydrogen production and develop new gas fields, necessitating significant infrastructure investments. According to the AfDB, renewable energy developer CWP’s Aman project has the potential to boost Mauritania’s GDP by 50 to 60% by 2035. Project Aman aims to annually produce 1.7 million tons of green hydrogen and 10 million tons of green ammonia.
