Mauritania and the International Development Association (IDA) – a member of the World Bank Group – have signed a $45 million agreement to support the development and resilience of the Senegal River basin.
The project aims to enhance access for border communities in the Senegal River Basin region to infrastructure and services at the regional level, with the goal of bolstering resilience to climate change.
Additionally, the project will focus on other areas including afforestation, implementation of smart agricultural practices, flood control, road rehabilitation and the preparation of studies for future investments and local development plans.
The deal was signed in Nouakchott in March 2024 by the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Abdesselam Ould Mohamed Saleh and Cristina Santos, the World Bank’s Representative in Mauritania.
Minister Saleh stressed that this project encompasses multiple components, such as supporting social cohesion and conflict resolution through financing activities that promote unity and integration.
Santos emphasized that this project marks the beginning of a series aimed at enhancing the socio-economic conditions of communities, benefiting over one million people in Mauritania, particularly women and youth.
