Sovereign Metals’ Kasiya Rutile-Graphite Project in Malawi – home to the world’s largest known natural rutile deposit and the second-largest flake graphite deposit – has met all critical standards for refractory applications.
Graphite testwork conducted by ProGraphite GmbH and Dorfner Anzaplan in Germany confirmed Kasiya’s deposits to have low sulfur content and minimal impurities, making them ideal for the refractory sector, the second-largest consumer of natural graphite.
“We know that almost 70% of Kasiya’s graphite meets the size requirements for refractory applications,” stated Frank Eagar, CEO, Sovereign Metals.
Previous tests also confirmed the project’s suitability for producing high-grade battery anode materials. With refractory applications and lithium battery anodes accounting for over 70% of global natural graphite demand, Kasiya is poised to play a key role in energy storage and steel manufacturing.
Sovereign Metals will now leverage these results to secure offtake agreements for the project.
