The gas find has the potential to support the firm’s second LNG project in the country.
U.S. oil and gas exploration company, Kosmos Energy, confirmed that it has made a large-scale gas find at its Yakaar-2 appraisal well in the Cayar Offshore Profond block, offshore Senegal.
The well, which forms part of the Yakaar-Teranga gas project, was drilled in approximately 2,500 kilometers of water to a total depth of 4,800 kilometers. Other partners on the project include supermajor BP and the country’s national oil company, PETROSEN.
In a statement released on Monday, the company said the Yakaar-2 appraisal well showed results significant enough to consider a second liquefied natural (LNG) export plant in Senegal, with the Yakaar-2 appraisal well having the potential to support an LNG project that provides significant volumes of natural gas.
“The Yakaar-2 appraisal well has encountered approximately 30 meters of net gas pay in a similar high-quality Cenomanian reservoir to the Yakaar-1 exploration well, continuing the 100 percent success rate of wells targeting the inboard Mauritania gas trend,” Kosmos said.
“The Yakaar-2 appraisal well demonstrates the scale and quality of the Yakaar resource base,” said Andre G. Inglis, the company’s Chief Executive Officer.
He added that “Senegal is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and Kosmos is excited to be working alongside BP and PETROSEN to support the country’s growing energy needs.”
