Kenya aims to open its first nuclear power plant by 2034.
Announced by Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi in August, the nuclear power plant will be situated in the town of Kilifi on the Indian Ocean coast and is expected to cost approximately $3.9 billion.
“Kenya is committed to leading in clean energy,” Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi stated, adding, “Kenya is focused on advancing nuclear technology as part of the sustainable energy strategy.”
Construction on the plant is due to start in 2027 while a research reactor is set to be commissioned by the early 2030s.
The project aims to increase Kenya’s energy capacity while reducing CO2 emissions and creating new job opportunities in the energy sector.
