Renewable energy and engineering company HyIron has announced that the electrolyser at its Namibia-based HyIron Oshivela plant has successfully produced its first green hydrogen. The 12 MW electrolyzer was brought online in March 2025 and is now operating within the project’s smart micro-grid to generate green hydrogen.
Representing the first of its kind in the country, the project will now progress toward full operational capacity. The facility will produce iron with zero emissions, utilizing renewable energy to produce 15,000 tons of Direct Reduced Iron per year in the first phase. The project has the potential to expand capacity to one million tons per annum in the future.
More than 60 Namibian Small to Medium Enterprises delivered expertise in the development of the facility. Construction commenced in April 2024, with operations starting less than a year later. The project aligns with broader national goals to strengthen sustainable iron production.
