Guinea-Bissau and Russia are set to collaborate on developing bauxite mining and oil exploration in Guinea-Bissau. During his visit to Russia this month, Guinean President Umaro Sissoco Embaló discussed strengthening economic cooperation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In the bauxite sector, Guinea-Bissau granted a previous concession to Angola, which later relinquished the exploration license. Following Angola’s withdrawal, multiple partners expressed interest in the concession, with the Russian company Russell ultimately securing the concession. Russell is set to commence bauxite exploration later this year.
Russia also expressed interest in supporting Guinean projects including the Grande Buba River port, the Buba Bamako railway and the Saltinho dam according to Carlos Pinto Pereira, Guinean Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was also present in Russia.
Minister Pereira stated, “We received promises from the Russian government that these projects are of Russian interest and that they will carefully consider this request from Guinea-Bissau.”
