Renewable energy company GRS, a subsidiary of the Gransolar Group, has reached commercial operations date for its 63.2 MW Greefspan II solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.
Power from the Greefspan II plant is capable of providing 20,000 South African households with renewable electricity and will mitigate approximately 130,000 tons of CO2 emissions equivalent per year. GRS installed 188,822 photovoltaic modules capable of producing approximately 150,000 MWh of clean energy per year.
Construction of the Greefspan II solar power plant has resulted in the creation of 700 jobs, with Gransolar indicating that it will continue to train and employ local workers in accordance with high quality standards to meet the requirements and needs of clients.
“The country requires new sustainable electricity supply capacity in order to support the growth and recovery of the economy from COVID-19,” stated GRS Country Manager, Dylan Tudor-Jones, adding that, “GRS has followed and implemented all the mitigation measures set out in the Environmental Management Program approved by the government.”
The Greefspan II solar PV power project falls under a consortium that includes fund manager, African Infrastructure Investment Managers, Spain’s TSK Solar, and South Africa’s Umbono Energy Partners, with construction of the plant entrusted to GRS.
The solar plant is the fourth operations and maintenance project for GRS in South Africa following the Lesedi solar PV project in Kimberly, the Letsatsi solar PV power plant in the Free State province, and the Jasper solar PV power plant in the Northern Cape, all with a capacity of 75 MW.
