Danish renewable energy company GreenGo Energy has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Mauritania to develop the Megaton Moon Green Hydrogen Project.
GreenGo Energy gained access to over 100,000 hectares of land near Nouakchott, marking the start of the project’s development phase which includes site and geotechnical surveys, meteorological data collection and feasibility studies.
The project aims to establish 6 GW of electrolysis capacity, 6.8 GW of onshore wind power and 6.3 GWp of solar energy in phases, with the first phase slated for completion by the end of 2029.
“This demonstrates the private sector’s continued confidence in the development of green hydrogen projects in Mauritania, despite global uncertainties surrounding demand,” stated Mohamed Khaled, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mauritania.
The firm will leverage Mauritania’s renewables potential, strategic location and energy policies, offering a competitive production cost, to drive the growth of the global green hydrogen economy, according to Karstein Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Hydrogen.
Anders Heine Jensen, Head of PtX at GreenGo Energy, said the project will enhance energy security, promote community development, improve water security for agriculture, and support the industrial production of green steel in Mauritania.
The project is GreenGo Energy’s first green hydrogen initiative in Africa.
