The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG development – situated on the maritime border of Senegal and Mauritania – has started commercial operations. The Gimi FLNG vessel – operated by marine LNG infrastructure company Golar LNG – reached its Commercial Operations Date this week, triggering the start of its 20-year Lease and Operate Agreement.
Developed by energy majors bp (operator) and Kosmos Energy in collaboration with Petrosen and Société Mauritanienne Des Hydrocarbures – the respective national oil companies of Senegal and Mauritania -, the GTA project is the first major offshore LNG development in the region. The project utilizes the Gimi FLNG vessel to monetize up to 15 trillion cubic feet of offshore gas resources, with the first phase set to produce 2.3 million tons per annum (mtpa). A second phase seeks to double production capacity to 5 mtpa.
The project partners achieved first gas flow at GTA in January 2025, with the first LNG cargo achieved in April 2025. Commercial operations officially position Senegal and Mauritania as LNG exporters.
