Uganda‘s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development signed an agreement with energy firm Global Gases Uganda Limited to develop a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder manufacturing plant.
Global Gases Uganda Limited will also establish several cylinder filling stations and distribution centers, with a goal of locally producing and distributing 500,000 LPG-filled cylinders. The goal is to start distribution by Q3 of the 2025/2026 financial year.
“This is an opportunity for all the households in Uganda to embrace clean cooking…,” stated Ruth Nankabirwa, Uganda’s Minister of Energy & Mineral Development.
LPG usage at the household level in Uganda is under 1% due to insufficient infrastructure. As such, the country aims to lower energy costs for consumers and reduce reliance on biomass for cooking. Current objectives are to reduce biomass reliance from 88% to 50% by 2025 through increased access to LPG. The country also targets to increase clean energy use for cooking from 15% in 2018/2019 to 50% by 2025.
