Ghana has opened the first gold refinery in the country to boost the value of its gold resources. The Royal Ghana Gold Refinery, situated in Accra, is a joint venture with Rosy Royal Minerals, Ghana’s central bank.
The refinery can process up to 400 kg of gold daily, equating to 120 tons annually. With gold accounting for 96% of Ghana’s exports and with 90 tons produced in 2023, licenses will be issued to artisanal miners to optimize refinery use.
“With the ability to refine our gold, we can sell it at fair value, retain its economic benefits within our borders, and create numerous jobs for the youth,” Ghana’s Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia stated at the refinery’s launch on August 8.
