Ghana has launched a 5 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system – integrated with existing hydropower infrastructure – at the Bui hydropower station in the Bono region.
The newly-installed solar PV system is part of a hybrid plant that utilizes both solar and hydraulic resources to generate and supply energy to the national grid. The floating solar plant will complement an existing 50 MWp land-based solar farm, as well as the 404 MW Bui hydropower plant.
The project features a range of benefits including protecting aquatic ecosystems, maintaining cooler water temperatures, safeguarding fish habitats and promoting biodiversity.
By leveraging floating PV modules, the system maximizes energy output and mitigates environmental impact, preserving land and forest areas from development.
Ghana has announced plans to generate 10% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
