Germany’s Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze embarked on a visit to Mauritania earlier this week under efforts to expand bilateral cooperation while strengthening job creation and sustainable economic growth. The visit highlights Germany’s commitment to investing in Mauritania as well as other countries in the broader Sahel region.
During her visit, Minister Schulze engaged with representatives from Mauritania’s public and private sectors.
The objective was to explore and discuss the role that Germany can play in boosting employment opportunities, safeguarding natural resources, and cultivating sustainable economic growth within Mauritania.
Minister Schulze stated that Germany is committed to supporting Mauritania in various areas, including addressing “prospects for young people through more employment, social security that helps to maintain social cohesion and preventing broad sections of the population from sliding further into poverty. In this way, more stable societies can be created…”
During the visit, Minister Schulze also toured various projects developed on the back of Mauritania-German cooperation. These included a registration center for the United Nations Refugee Agency and a sustainable artisanal and industrial fishing systems project, funded by German bank KfW Development Bank.
Minister Schulze also currently serves as President of the Sahel Alliance, an international collaboration dedicated to fostering sustainable development in Sahel countries.
