Africa’s gas midstream sector will attract $115 billion in investments between 2031 and 2040, accounting for 16% of global midstream capital expenditure, according to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum’s (GECF) latest Global Gas Outlook Report.
The surge in investment will be driven by efforts to boost Africa’s natural gas exports. The GECF forecasts Africa to account for 23% of global liquefaction investments, dedicating up to 85% of its midstream spending towards the sector by 2050. Major projects will include Mozambique’s Rovuma LNG and Coral South FLNG, Nigeria’s liquefaction expansions, the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project in Senegal and Mauritania and Gabon’s first LNG developments.
Africa will allocate $16 billion – 14% of its total midstream spending – toward regasification projects to meet the rising local demand for LNG, driven by economic growth and electrification. South Africa is expected to lead in regasification investments as it diversifies its energy mix and enhance gas accessibility.
