Energy major TotalEnergies has commenced the conversion of the Kaminho FPSO in China, marking a crucial step towards the completion of the Kaminho deepwater development in Angola. The project comprises the conversion of a Very Large Crude Carrier to a FPSO unit, which will be connected to a subsea production network at Block 20/11. Production is on track for 2028.
Following its completion, the Kaminho FPSO will be an all-electric vessel with a capacity of 70,000 barrels per day. The initial stages of the conversion include the dismantling of parts of the structure – carried out by China Merchants Heavy Industry and oilfield services company Saipem. The broader Kaminho development represents the first large deepwater development in the Kwanza basin and will harness resources from the Cameia and Golfinho fields.
A ceremony held in China in April 2025 marked the official start of the conversion. Attendees included representatives from Angola’s National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency (ANPG), national oil company Sonangol and TotalEnergies. Final Investment Decision on the project was reached in 2024.
