The European Union (EU) has launched a technical assistance mission to strengthen the Republic of Congo’s hydropower concession framework, aiming to enhance the country’s electricity supply and align its power sector with international standards.
This initiative focuses on feasibility studies, private operator selection and market regulation to support the hydropower concession process. By addressing Congo’s electricity challenges – characterized by aging infrastructure and limited investment – the EU’s support is expected to boost national electricity production, expand access for households and businesses, attract private investment and improve technical performance and service quality.
The privatization effort encompasses major hydropower plants, including Imboulou, Djoué, Moukoukoulou and Liouesso, as well as the Djéno gas-fired power station.
