State utility Ethiopian Electric Power will begin exporting electricity to Tanzania in mid-September to boost export revenue and regional energy security.
Ethiopia increased its electricity export revenue to $140 million in the 2023/2024 fiscal year, with a target to generate $300 million in the 2024/2025 fiscal year.
The country exports electricity to Djibouti, Sudan and Kenya and is also planning to extend trade to Somaliland and South Sudan utilizing the existing Ethiopia-Kenya power transmission line.
“With five major power generation projects currently under construction, we expect an increase in our electricity supply over the next few years,” stated Ethiopian Electric Power CEO Ashebir Balcha, adding “This will allow us to meet growing domestic needs while increasing exports to neighbouring countries.”
Electricity production reached 20,522 gigawatt-hours last year, with the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam contributing 17% of power generated.
