According to reports by Reuters, Ethiopia’s Minister of Water and Energy, Dr Seleshi Bekele has said energy production on the Grand Renaissance Dam will commence in December of 2020.
The 6,000 MW project – considered the largest dam in Africa – will be the largest contributor to the country’s efforts to become the biggest power exporter on the continent.
Providing the first update on construction by a senior government official since the cancellation of the contract with the Metals and Engineering Corporation to build the dam’s turbines last August, Dr Bekele said the government expects the dam to be fully operational by 2022.
“750 megawatts is the planned initial production with two turbines,” said the minister.
