South African energy company Eskom has announced that it expects to conclude its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracting model by June this year. The model will serve as part of the Eskom’s Transmission Development Plan (TDP), which highlights the utility’s transmission network infrastructure investment requirements.
Announced by Eskom Managing Director of Transmission Segomoco Scheppers on May 21, the model will involve the front-end engineering design and procurement of EPC contracts for the development of transmission networks across South Africa.
“The matter of securing servitudes and the right to construct and traverse over private property has been a huge challenge and, in this regard, we have successfully worked to expropriate with market-related appropriation,” Shceppers stated.
It was noted that South Africa will need to develop 1,500km of new transmission lines per year between 2024 and 2032 to facilitate the deployment of 50 GW of new generation capacity.
