More than 80% of gas produced by Eni in Africa is supplied to the domestic market to address local energy access, Guido Brusco, COO of Global Natural Resources at Eni told Energy Capital & Power during the Angola Oil & Gas 2024 conference last week.
According to Brusco, Africa has been a pivotal market for Eni since it entered the region in 1952, and several new large-scale projects are currently underway.
“With 600 million people living in energy poverty, we are not just developing energy for exports,” stated Brusco, noting that the firm’s portfolio in the region – including a production capacity of more than 900,000 barrels of oil equivalent – aims to drive energy security, affordability and transition.
Through its affiliate company Azule Energy, Eni is developing two multi-billion projects in Angola: the New Gas Consortium, set to deliver 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day by early-2026, and the Agogo Field Development, a first-of-its-kind, high-efficiency project in Africa, according to Brusco. The Italian multinational is also helping expand Angola’s refinery capacity and supporting energy transition efforts, having launched a 25 MW solar facility two years ago, as well as rolling out a series of gas monetization initiatives across the continent.
“In Ivory Coast, we are advancing the Baleine gas project, and in Congo, our FLNG facility is on track to become operational by the end of next year, increasing production to three million tons annually,” Brusco added.
Meanwhile, Eni is progressing a major gas development in Libya and approaching a final investment decision for a second FLNG project in Mozambique.
“We are also developing carbon capture projects in the U.S., the UK and Libya,” said Brusco.
