The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with two renewable energy developers – Scatec and AMEA Power – to advance large-scale solar and battery storage projects in the country.
Norwegian renewable energy producer Scatec has secured a 25-year PPA with the EETC for a 1 GW solar power plant and a 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). With construction scheduled for 2025, this will be the first hybrid solar and battery project in Egypt.
Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog stated, “We will now finalise land lease agreements, grid connection agreements and financing and prepare for construction of the project.”
Meanwhile, Dubai-based AMEA Power has signed PPAs with EETC for a 1 GW solar plant with a 600 MWh battery and a 300 MWh BESS to expand its 500 MW Abydos solar project in Aswan. AMEA Power expects to invest $800 million in the projects. These developments will add to the company’s newly awarded projects, which now includes 2,000 MW of solar and wind and 900 MWh of BESS in Egypt.
AMEA Power’s 500 MW Abydos solar project is slated for commissioning by October 2024, while the 500 MW Amunet wind project is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2025.
