Egypt has launched its National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy as part of the country’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and transition to a low-carbon economy. The government expects the strategy to contribute $18 billion to Egypt’s GDP and create over 100,000 jobs by 2040.
The strategy aims to increase hydrogen production, expand its use in various sectors including industry and transportation and enhance Egypt’s presence in the global hydrogen market.
According to the Prime Minister Mustafa Moadouli, the strategy will support Egypt’s ‘Vision 2030’ sustainable development goals, which focuses on Egypt’s natural resources – particularly solar and wind energy – to enhance low-carbon hydrogen production.
Adviser Mohammed Al-Homsani, spokesman for the House of Ministers, noted that the strategy was developed with international partners, including financial institution the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The National Council for Green Hydrogen, established in 2023, will monitor the strategy’s implementation. A new investment website has also been developed to attract private sector investment in green hydrogen projects.
