Africa’s leading investment platform for the energy sector, Energy Capital & Power (ECP), delivered five events in 2023, whose deals, discussions and collaborations underscored growing foreign interest in African energy. With eight events planned for 2024, there has never been a more opportune time for investors, companies and organizations to engage with Africa’s leading energy and mining projects.
South Sudan Oil & Power
ECP’s longest-running event, the South Sudan Oil & Power (SSOP) conference and exhibition, kicked off the 2023 event calendar, gathering over 600 attendees, 25 companies and six ministers for two days of discussions and deals. Event highlights included the signing of five industry-advancing deals and the launch of an aerial surveying program by South Africa’s Strategic Fuel Fund and South Sudan’s Nilepet, while 64 speakers drove discussions on the wider East African energy sector and its value chain.
Angola Oil & Gas
The fourth edition of the Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) conference and exhibition featured over 2,000 attendees, with 73 speakers and over 389 companies participating in the event. OPEC celebrated its 63rd anniversary at the event, while seven signed deals underscored AOG’s role as an investment-facilitating platform. Since the event’s launch last April, the AOG event website has recorded over 220,000 readers, with 6,000 recorded during the week of the event alone. Ensuring a wide reach, 131 media outlets were in attendance, with over 28,700 social media impressions generated.
African Energy Week
Africa’s largest energy event, African Energy Week (AEW), took place in Cape Town last October, with over 5,000 attendees, 22 ministries and 47 private companies taking part. Serving as the annual conference of the African Energy Chamber and organized by ECP, the third edition of the event featured several highlights, including the Just Energy Transition Concert; an African Export-Import Bank Deal Room, which produced four multi-faceted deal signings; the African Farmout Forum; a Gala Dinner; and the launch of Energy Invest: Namibia 2023 – ECP’s inaugural Namibian investment report.
Critical Minerals Africa
Taking place over three days in Cape Town and in parallel to AEW, Critical Minerals Africa (CMA) provided a platform where governments and private sector engaged on bilateral and multilateral levels, with a view to increasing production, stimulating investment and strengthening Africa’s critical mineral supply chains. Highlights included investor briefings from the U.S., U.K., European Union and Argentina, as well as strategic presentations and investor briefings on Angola, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Sudan. Notably, the U.K. announced a R20-million ($1.05-million) pledge towards expanding Africa’s critical mineral supply chains, with a focus on generating value-added activities and creating local jobs.
MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power
ECP organized the third edition of the premier energy event for the MSGBC region – MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power – last November. With over 1,000 delegates in attendance, the event featured 53 speakers, 89 VIPs, 18 participating countries and 50 participating companies. Highlights included collaborative panel discussions; a technical program; an innovative exhibition; and a Networking Under the Stars function. The event garnered widespread attention, with over 1.5 million online and social media impressions and an email database of 60,000+, as well as 260,839 visits to the MSGBC event website.
What to Expect in 2024
On the back of a successful 2023 event year, ECP’s 2024 events calendar provides stakeholders from across the African and global energy community the chance to connect, collaborate and drive new investment in Africa’s energy and mining sectors.
The year will kick off with the second edition of the Libya Energy & Economic Summit in Tripoli from January 13-14, followed by the Global Black Impact Summit in Dubai on February 27. From May 14-15, the second Invest in African Energy forum will take place in Paris, facilitating European investment in African energy projects. SSOP returns on June 25-28, serving as the leading platform for East African energy deals.
September 2024 will see the return of the AOG conference in Luanda, connecting foreign capital to Angolan energy opportunities, while October marks the second edition of CMA – Africa’s global critical minerals platform. AEW makes its return to Cape Town from November 4-8, while the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power conference – taking place in Dakar in December – will round out ECP’s 2024 events calendar.
