Senegal has secured an €8.51-million loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support its energy efficiency initiative, the Program to Promote Efficient Lighting Lamps (PPLEEF).
This marks the AfDB’s first fully dedicated funding for demand-side energy management. The loan will fund the replacement of incandescent bulbs with modern LED lights for 700,000 households and 80,000 businesses in Dakar, Thiès and Diourbel.
“It will relieve the grid with annual electricity savings of more than 189 GWh,” stated Mame Coumba Ndiaye, General Director of Senegal’s Agence pour l’Économie et la Maîtrise de l’Énergie.
According to Jalel Chabchoub, Chief Energy Efficiency Officer in the AfDB’s Renewable and Energy Efficiency Department, PPLEEF will reduce energy demand during peak hours, advance Senegal’s progress toward universal energy access and delay the need for new power plants to meet rising demand.
