The Transitional Legislative Assembly of Burkina Faso has greenlit a €45.7 million loan from China’s Export-Import Bank to finance the construction of the 25 MWp Donsin solar power plant and associated electricity storage system.
Endorsed by the Council of Ministers in February 2024, the project will be located at Donsin airport in the Loumbila district.
Anticipated to take 15 months to develop, the solar project also encompasses the establishment of a 5 MW/20 MWh battery storage system – aimed at enhancing energy security at Donsin airport and increasing Burkina Faso’s total generating capacity.
Currently, the nation possesses 714.4 MW of available capacity, with 220 MW being imported. The Donsin project is aligned with efforts to curtail reliance on imports, thereby reinforcing the country’s energy self-sufficiency.
