China has granted $27 million to Guinea-Bissau to support various projects. In July, Guinean President Umaro Sissoco Embalo met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and both leaders signed a bilateral agreement focused on economic development, customs inspection and quarantine, geology, and mining.
While the specifics of the projects are yet to be disclosed, China plans to expand cooperation in mining, infrastructure construction, ocean resources, and agriculture. President Xi encouraged Chinese companies to invest in Guinea-Bissau, reaffirming China’s commitment to developing local content.
In the past, China has financed a range of projects in Guinea-Bissau, including official buildings, roads, and stadiums. Notable examples are the $14.7 million highway linking Osvaldo Vieira International Airport to Safim and the $26 million fishing port in Bandim.
President Embalo stated, “Regardless of this donation, Guinea-Bissau will present the projects it has planned to our Chinese brothers for discussion.”
President Xi reiterated, “China is willing to continue to provide support for Guinea-Bissau’s domestic construction to the best of its ability.”
