Russian nuclear company Rosatom and Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries signed an agreement for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country. With construction estimated to be completed by 2025, the project is expected to double the country’s electricity production by 2030.
Detailing the terms of the facility’s development, the deal features a roadmap outlining strategies for enhancing Burkina Faso’s expertise in nuclear energy as well as the development of nuclear infrastructure. The agreement also outlines intentions to establish the relevant regulatory framework for nuclear energy in the country.
“The establishment of this power plant will initially help reduce the energy deficit and eventually support all sectors of Burkina Faso’s socio-economic life,” stated Yacouba Zabré Gouba, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries.
The collaboration follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Burkina Faso and Rosatom in October 2023.
