Burkina Faso‘s President Ibrahim Traoré has announced the establishment of a national atomic energy agency. The new agency will be responsible for defining the country’s atomic energy policy and overseeing its implementation.
According to President Traoré, the agency “will ensure the energy independence of Burkina Faso, the industrialization of the country and facilitate access to electricity throughout the country.”
The announcement follows the government’s passing of a Bill in July granting privileges to experts and officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency to support the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant.
The nuclear power plant will be developed in partnership between Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Careers and nuclear energy company Rosatom and is due to start construction by 2030.
