Energy supermajor bp has discovered oil and natural gas reserves in the King Mariout Block, offshore Egypt.
The King Mariout exploration well is situated close to existing infrastructure, including facilities and subsea pipelines, which serve as part of bp’s West Nile Delta project. With aims to boost domestic energy output, this proximity to existing infrastructure will help increase gas production for the country.
The discovery of oil and gas at the King Mariout Block adds to bp’s successful portfolio of drilling operations in Egypt.
Last September, bp successfully drilled and prepared two additional gas production wells at the offshore Raven Field, with offshore installations currently underway to link the wells to existing networks. Gas production from the Raven field is expected later this month.
Following its operations at the Raven Field, bp will commence drilling activities at the King Mariout Block, with plans to reach the target reservoir by the end of this month.
The discovery was confirmed by Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on February 5, with additional details to be released soon.
