Angola is assessing opportunities for reactivating closed oil wells across the country’s on- and offshore basins, the country’s concessionaire the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency (ANPG) announced. This will support the country’s objective of maintaining oil production at 1.1 million barrels per day until 2027.
Speaking in Luanda this week, Ana Miala, Executive Director of the ANPG, explained that at present, 1,630 wells are inactive in the country, representing 45% of the country’s total well count. While 767 wells will be closed due to exhausted reserves, the ANPG is looking at reopening others, when feasible.
As such, the ANPG has begun collaborating with IOCs and oilfield operators to recover some of the wells. Miala said that “we are in the phase of reevaluating the closed wells with partners.”
Additionally, the ANPG is driving an incremental production initiative, which aims to revitalize production at mature assets. The initiative – backed by supportive regulations and investment terms across the sector – incentivizes operators to invest in well recovery with the aim of maximizing reserves across assets.
