Railway operator Lobito Atlantic Railway has exported its first shipment of copper from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the U.S.
The copper cathodes were transported from the city of Kolwezi, DRC, to Angola’s Port of Lobito in six days via a Lobito Atlantic Railway-operated train, arriving on August 18.
“This shipment highlights the growing supply of services by international shipping companies to the Port of Lobito, which will support the growing development of our operations and regular shipments of raw materials to Europe and America,” Francisco Franca, Chairman of the Lobito Atlantic Railway, said.
The cargo, bound for Baltimore in the U.S., was loaded onto the MSC SAMU container vessel.
The Lobito Atlantic Railway consortium is a joint venture between global commodities company Trafigura, construction and infrastructure management company Mota-Engil and independent rail operator Vecturis SA.
