Algeria will export fuel oil to Lebanon to help power the country’s electricity plants. The move comes as Lebanon was forced to shut down operations at the Zahrani power plant following the depletion of feedstock.
Algerian Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui made this decision known during a conversation with his Lebanese counterpart Najib Mikati, assuring that the aid will be delivered promptly.
The decision follows an announcement by Lebanon’s state-owned utility company Électricité du Liban in July stating that a nationwide power outage was imminent. Lack of adequate supply have seen the Zahrani facility’s generators – which run on diesel – supply power at irregular intervals. As such, the Algerian fuel delivery aims to ensure operations resume at the facility.
