Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach, in partnership with government agency the General Directorate of Forests (DGF), will initiate a pilot project to plant 10 million shrubs across 10,000 to 13,000 hectares to reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
The project is part of Sonatrach’s climate strategy, which aims to plant over 420 million trees on 560,000 hectares with a $1 billion budget.
A feasibility study by the DGF will be conducted to determine suitable tree species and sites within national forests in the country.
Part of the project will also contribute to the Green Dam program, which is designed to combat desertification.
