Algeria is set to re-launch the Algerian Renewable Energy Development and Energy Efficiency Program (PENREE), which aims produce clean energy by 2030.
According to Algeria’s Energy Minister, Mustapha Guitouni, the objective of the project is to produce 22,000MW. To kick start the program, Algeria will call for tenders for the construction of solar power plants, with a combined capacity of 150MW, this year.
The electricity regulation commission in Algeria has drawn up specifications, which could potentially attract 70 investors exclusively interested in solar energy. According to reports, Algeria’s national oil company, Sonatrach, has already signed an agreement with Italian company ENI to build a solar power plant in the country.
The Minister hopes that PENREE will assist in gas savings for Algeria, which is almost 100% electrified through gas.
“We will gain 20 billion m3 of gas, knowing that Algeria is currently exploiting 50 billion m3 of this energy for electricity production,” he said.
