Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach and its Mauritanian counterpart Societe Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH) signed an MoU on January 30, 2025 to enhance bilateral cooperation in the oil sector.
Under the terms of the deal, Mauritania will leverage Sonatrach’s expertise to strengthen oil and gas exploration and production activities across onshore and offshore acreage. Mauritania will also benefit from Sonatrach’s experience in workforce training, with the deal outlining efforts to assess the feasibility of developing specialized laboratories for oil and gas and infrastructure for energy storage and transportation.
Additionally, Sonatrach will explore the potential to supply petroleum products to Mauritania while conducting feasibility studies for the establishment of a joint company for the development of the downstream sector. The parties also seek to establish a joint research company for the development of green and white hydrogen.
The agreement deepens cooperation on energy between Algeria and Mauritania, unlocks opportunities for joint investments and advances Sonatrach’s strategic expansion in African energy, according to a statement from Sonatrach.
