Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani have jointly inaugurated a free trade zone between the two countries.
The inauguration – held in Tindouf commune in western Algeria on February 22 – also marked the commencement of construction on an 840km road connecting the towns of Tindouf, Algeria and Zouerate, Mauritania. This infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity between the two nations and facilitate operations within the newly established free trade zone.
In a joint statement, Presidents Tebboune and Ghazouani encouraged Mauritanian investors to leverage the tax and customs exemptions provided by the project. Ghazouani hailed the trade agreement as a catalyst for strengthened bilateral cooperation, foreseeing it as a “meeting place and an exchange bridge” between the two nations.
In addition to Mauritania, Algeria has also outlined plans to establish free trade zones with neighboring states including Tunisia, Libya and Niger, which are slated for implementation in 2024.
