Telecommunications company Airtel Africa has signed an agreement with tech giant SpaceX to bring Starlink’s satellite internet services to its customers across the continent. The partnership aims to improve digital connectivity in rural and underserved areas, using SpaceX’s low Earth orbit satellite network.
To date, SpaceX has obtained operating licenses in nine of the 14 African countries where Airtel Africa operates. Regulatory processes are ongoing in the remaining five markets. Once fully licensed, Starlink will support Airtel’s expansion of high-speed internet services through satellite connectivity and cellular backhaul solutions.
“This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step to demonstrate our continued commitment to advancing Africa’s digital economy through strategic investments and partnerships,” said Sunil Taldar, Managing Director and CEO, Airtel Africa.
The partnership will focus on providing reliable internet access to institutions such as schools and healthcare centers, while also supporting broader network expansion efforts. Airtel Africa plans to integrate Starlink’s technology to strengthen its digital infrastructure and extend service coverage in areas that are difficult to reach with traditional terrestrial networks.
Both companies will also explore the potential use of Airtel’s infrastructure to expand Starlink’s footprint across the continent. This includes evaluating how existing towers and telecom assets can be used to accelerate the rollout of satellite-based services.
“We are very excited to work with Airtel to bring the transformative benefits of Starlink to the African people in new and innovative ways,” said Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, SpaceX.
