Africa Oil & Power’s Top 9 for 2019

Africa Oil & Power (AOP), the continent’s leading platform for energy investment and policy, has had an amazing year. AOP hosted APPO Cape VII, Angola Oil & Gas 2019, AOP Investor Forum 2019, AOP 2019, South Sudan Oil and Power 2019, and GECF 5^th Gas Summit, bringing together ministers, senior-level government officials and top executives of private sector companies.

Nine moments in 2019, where Africa and AOP united:

1. APPO Cape VII Congress and Exhibition brought influential petroleum industry leaders from African Petroleum Producers’ Organization nations and oil and gas ministers together on the African continent, including the President of Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
2. Africa Energy Series – Equatorial Guinea, the most comprehensive report focusing on Equatorial Guinea’s energy leaders, resources, main actors and future potential, was launched at the AOP Investor Forum 2019.

3. “Africa has great unexplored hydrocarbon potential, and [everyone] has something to say about the energy security of the continent itself and of the industrialized world in general. In this aspect, Angola occupies one of the top spots on the continent.” – H.E. Joao Lourenco, President of the Republic of Angola, said during his keynote speech at the first-ever Angola Oil & Gas conference and exhibition.

4. During AOP 2019, H.E. Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, South Africa, accepted the African Energy Series – South Africa report and dedicated it to the late Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, H.E. Bavelile Hlongwa.

5. Somalia’s Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Resources, H.E. Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed said “The opportunity is huge – Somalia is a nation rich in hydrocarbons. Geological structures indicate that the potential is at least as significant as neighboring basins located in Seychelles, Madagascar, Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique. As a result, Somalia could become one of the most significant oil plays in offshore East Africa, which is why we are already attracting very significant interest from the oil and gas majors,” during his keynote speech at AOP 2019.

6. Numerous awards were given by AOP to individuals who #MakeEnergyWork, including the ‘Africa Oil Man of the Year’ award, which was presented during AOP 2019 in Cape Town.

7. “We have 13 blocks available and we invite you to invest in these blocks” -H.E. Awow Daniel Chuang, Minister of Petroleum and Mining, South Sudan, announced South Sudan’s 2020 bidding round during South Sudan Oil and Power 2019, and called for technology providers and explorers to invest in the blocks.

8. “The objective of this summit is to attract more African countries. This increases our numbers. The future is gas.” – said H.E. Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima, Minister of Mines and Hydrocarbons, Equatorial Guinea, while delivering his closing speech at the GECF 5^th Gas Summit.
