Multilateral development finance institution the African Development Bank (AfDB) has launched two agricultural projects aimed at strengthening value chains and improving food security in Burkina Faso.
The first project includes the second phase of the Burkina Faso segment of the Food and Nutrition Insecurity Resilience Program in the Sahel (P2-P2RS)– a regional initiative that aims to improve living conditions by strengthening food and nutrient security in the West African region. The project will be implemented this year and builds on the first phase of the project, which featured the development of agriculture-related infrastructure from 2016-2022. The AfDB is providing EUR 54 million for the second phase, with the project set to be implemented across 33 communities in six regions of the country.
The second project – the Integrated Maize, Soybean, Poultry and Fish Chain Development and Resilience Building Project (PIMSAR) – aims to support the integrated, climate-resilient and inclusive development of agriculture products in the country. This will be done by increasing the production of fish, maize and soybeans, while integrating value chains. The AfDB is providing EUR 42 million for the project, which aims to reach 30,000 direct beneficiaries in the Boucle du Mouhoun, Center, Center-West and Hauts-Bassins regions of the country.
According to Amadou Dicko, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fish Resources of Burkina Faso, “the bank’s commitment in the agriculture sector can be seen in the implementation of many projects and development programs, including the P2-P2RS and PIMSAR…”
