The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $13.2-million loan to improve water access and sanitation in Zambia.
The initiative is poised to improve sanitation and hygiene for roughly 460,000 people in the communities of Kabwe and Bauleni.
Funding will be used to rehabilitate the Mulungushi water purification plant in the town of Kabwe, boosting production to 37,500 m3 of drinking water per day. The funds will also be used to extend water transportation and distribution networks by over 70 km and install five new boreholes in the catchment areas of Kalulu and Mukobeko.
In addition to the AfDB’s loan, the initiative is supported by a $6.05-million grant from the EU’s Nexus Energy and Water Program for Zambia, which falls under the organization’s “Global Gateway” strategy.
