Xlinks has secured a $14.1 million investment from Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), a leading infrastructure solutions provider in Africa, to advance the development of its Morocco–UK Power Project, which aims to deliver affordable, reliable, and clean energy from Morocco to Britain within the next decade.
The Project will create 11.5 GW of renewable generation, 22.5 GWh of battery storage and a 3.6 GW high-voltage direct current interconnector to carry solar and wind-generated electricity from Morocco to U.K.
“As this transformative project advances, it will not only benefit Morocco and Africa but also significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with the majority of investments set to drive this change occurring within the Global South,” said Samaila Zubairu, AFC President & Chief Executive Officer.
Upon completion, the project will have the capacity to fulfill 8% of Britain’s existing electricity requirements. Situated in southern Morocco, the newly established electricity generation and battery storage facilities will be linked to Britain through 4,000km of HVDC subsea cables.
“AFC brings an unparalleled understanding of, and experience in, African infrastructure. Their mission – to foster economic growth and industrial development on the continent – aligns closely with the planned outcomes of the Morocco-UK Power Project,” said James Humfrey, CEO of Xlinks.
