South Africa‘s Independent Power Producers Office has announced the submission of 33 bids by 28 companies for Bid Window 3 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Program.
This round of procurement targets 616 MW of battery energy storage capacity across five designated sites in the Free State: Harvard, Leander, Theseus, Everest and Merapi.
The list of bidders includes a variety of consortiums and developers, many of which are registered under holding names that obscure the specific Independent Power Producers (IPPs) involved. However, prominent participants include TotalEnergies, which submitted four bids and Globeleq, with a single submission.
Preferred bidders are set to be announced in February 2025, with operations anticipated to commence by 2027.
